Inside secrets of couture sewing
This specialist workshop focuses on equipping you with technical knowledge and practical skills that will enable you to elevate your dressmaking or tailoring skills by incorporating manageable couture techniques. You will create a sample skirt section which alongside the instructions sheets that you will receive will serve you as a practical reference for future use. This workshop would be best suited to those with some dressmaking experience, but you do not need to be a professional.
You will receive expert guidance and supervision from a tutor who many years experience of teaching various aspects of creative textiles, dressmaking and tailoring as well as creating custom clothing and carrying out wedding dress alterations.
You can expect to learn about and create samples of the following:-
- Changing the properties of fabric used by the addition of interlining
- Tailor tacking fabric to mark seamlines
- Joining garment sections by matching stitching lines instead of outside edges
- A couture dart
- A Hong Kong finish for neatening of seams or hems
- Using a pick stitch for hand finishing a lapped zip or for the securing of a facing
A skirt section has been chosen as it is ideal for incorporating these individual parts together. The techniques are readily transferable to other garments. The shape and size is straightforward enough allow flexibility to discover and try unfamiliar techniques or improve upon existing ones. It also enables individuals to work at a pace best suited to themselves. Couture techniques are about the care taken and the hand work involved. They are not necessarily complex.
This workshop is restricted to five people to keep a small and friendly group, and give you all plenty of time with me on the day.
The full workshop fee of £45 is required to secure your place. If the workshop is cancelled by me, all monies paid to me will be refunded. No further liability can be accepted. The participant is responsible for their own travel, accommodation (if required), food and insurance costs.
